生涯と経歴

プリーストリーは1733年、リーズ近郊のバーストールで非国教徒の一家に生まれた。幼少期から語学や学問に優れた才能を示し、ダヴェントリー・アカデミーで合理的な神学を学んだ後、各地で聖職者や講師を務めた。ナントウィッチやウォリントンなどの非国教徒向けアカデミーで教鞭を執り、自然哲学や現代語教育に注力した。

科学的業績と酸素の発見

プリーストリーの最大の科学的功績は、1774年夏に行った実験による「脱フロギストン空気」（現在の酸素）の単離と命名である。酸化第二水銀を加熱することで得られた気体が燃焼を激しく促し、動物の呼吸を支えることを発見した。しかし、彼自身は当時の主流であったフロギストン説（燃素説）の枠組みでこの現象を解釈し続け、アントワーヌ・ラヴォアジエらが進めた化学革命の新しい理論体系を受け入れることはなかった。また、炭酸水の発明や、アンモニア、塩化水素、一酸化窒素などの気体の単離といった業績も残している。

神学、政治、および晩年

プリーストリーにとって科学と神学は不可分なものであり、啓蒙合理主義とキリスト教の融合を目指した。政治的には言論の自由や宗教的寛容を強く主張し、フランス革命を支持したことからイギリス国内で激しい反発を受けた。1791年のバーミンガム暴動では自宅や教会が暴徒によって破壊・放火され、その後ロンドンを経て1794年にアメリカ合衆国への移住を余儀なくされた。晩年はペンシルベニア州ノーサンバーランドで過ごし、1804年に同地で亡くなった。
